Jump Scare Rating: Overall, It is not as scary as some might expect and while there are numerous jump scares, only three or four scenes are likely to truly startle audiences.
Jump Scare Times
2:48 – There is a slight scare when a walkie talkie makes a loud noise as Georgie descends the stairs to the basement.
6:05 – There is another minor scare as we see Pennywise’s eyes appear at the drain grill in front of Georgie.
19:34 – There is a loud bang on a door as Mike takes out some rubbish.
20:21 – After a rather intense scene, Mike is almost run over by Henry’s car.
22:55 – The distorted woman from the painting appears in front of Stan.
28:13 – In the library basement, Ben is running away from a headless man when Pennywise suddenly appears in front of him and shouts “Egg Boy”.
28:45 – Ben is jumped by Patrick as he leaves the library (this is a very minor jump scare).
35:08 – Patrick enters the sewerage system and uses an aerosol can and lighter flamethrower style as he hunts for Ben, suddenly he sees various dead children standing in front of him.
35:46 – Patrick sees a balloon in front of him and it pops to reveal Pennywise standing there.
53:34 – The hair from the drain suddenly winds itself around Beverly’s wrist.
57:34 – In the kitchen, Georgie rushes past the screen in the foreground as Bill looks on.
59:19 – Bill sees Georgie in the flooded basement, he slowly begins to decay and suddenly Pennywise rushes through the water towards Bill.
1:13:51 – The children are in Bill’s garage looking at various slides on a projector screen that suddenly begins to take on a life of its own. Pennywise appears on the projector screen and the kids panic and attempt to turn the projector off. Suddenly Pennywise is coming out of the projector and into the room with them.
1:19:10 – In the Neibolt street house – Richie, Bill, and Eddie see Betty begging for help at a doorway when she is suddenly pulled off screen.
1:21:36 – After Richie finds himself locked in the room full of clowns, Richie turns around and a clown doll is standing right behind him and he gets a scare.
1:22:43 – In a room full of clowns, Richie walks towards a coffin and opens it. The scene is quite suspenseful and we expect a jump scare upon the coffin being opened however the scare doesn’t occur until after Richie closes the lid and Pennywise jumps up from behind.
1:24:37 – Bill and Richie go through a door marked “not scary” and after a couple of seconds the light is turned on and we see Betty Ripson hanging by ropes.
1:38:10 – In perhaps the only truly unexpected jump scare, Beverly turns around to leave the bathroom after a confrontation with her father and is attacked by Pennywise who is standing behind her.
1:45:43 – Beverly notices a music box playing, the music stops and a second later we get a slight jump scare as a toy clown pops out of the box.
1:48:49 – Stan hears someone whispering his name, he shines the torch down the tunnel and sees Pennywise briefly appear at the opening.
1:49:45 – Stan looks around with a torch and there is a scare when the distorted woman from the painting rushes at Stan.
1:52:28 – Eddie slips into the water in a sewer tunnel and sees several floating corpses.
1:56:32 – There is a slight scare when Georgie’s motionless body suddenly starts to shake.
